Kenyans are looking for human-rights based solutions: such as mis- and disinformation. However, most recent digital and cybercrime legislation has instead created a legal environment which threatens fundamental human rights including the rights to freedom of expression, privacy, and access to information in Kenya. Safeguarding digital rights and online speech is fundamental to protecting freedom of expression in Kenya.
This project incorporates context-appropriate technologies that can play a critical role in the future of the country’s information ecosystem. To ensure that secure and responsible use of digital ecosystems strengthens civil society and media, the project will also focus on improving digital literacy and cybersecurity practices among those online. Strengthening these practices will support users in protecting against rising digital authoritarianism.
